Owner of shady debt collection agency in Atlanta area is arrested

Atlanta residents who struggle with debt may be surprised to learn that federal law actually bans debt collectors from threatening and harassing debtors. Many debtors in Georgia have been subjected to creditor harassment and other illegal debt collection tactics, without knowing that they are protected from such treatment by law. When a person begins to face wage garnishment, liens or aggressive communications from debt collectors, it can be critical to contact a debt relief and bankruptcy attorney in order to protect one’s rights.

The owner of one ruthless debt collection company in Cobb County was recently arrested in the wake of shuttering her company; the company went out of business after CBS Atlanta began reporting on the aggressive measures the company was taking in order to collect debts. Gov. Nathan Deal’s Office of Consumer Protection is now investigating the company.

The owner of the company has told CBS in the past that she fired some of her employees who were being too aggressive in their efforts to collect debts. The measures reportedly included scaring debtors into paying money that they did not even owe, and using legal jargon to confuse and worry debtors. 

The woman has now been arrested in an unrelated case, according to CBS, which involves allegations of fraudulently collecting unemployment insurance.

While this company has closed down, there are others out there like it. Those who are subjected to this type of harassment do have rights and options. It is important to talk to a reputable attorney in order to understand one’s options and get out from underneath debt and harassment.
